GIRD GLOBAL - A Global initiative for resilience and development

Global initiative for Resilience and development (GIRD) is a non-profit organization established in 2016 to replicate and cascade the global agenda of strengthening livelihoods through resilience and development. GIRD is legally registered in Kenya and Somalia. GIRD operates in Northern Kenya such as Tana River, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Moyale and Isiolo.

In Somalia we operate in northern Somalia and Southern Somalia specifically in the States of Puntland, Southwest and Jubaland. GIRD was founded with the aim of mobilizing and building capacity of pastoralist communities by offering technical assistance and restoration of and harmony among the diverse communities.

GIRD has extensive working experience, technical expertise, collaboration with key community partners and governments. GIRD constantly promotes community participation in project planning, implementation, monitoring & evaluation in order to improve accountability, transparency and sustainability of its interventions.
Our mission is to work with and within our target communities to strengthen and develop their capacities and to create an environment in which they can attain their full potential to with- stand environmental, social, economic and po- litical shocks and drawbacks.
GIRD's Vision is to create development driven and resilient communities with diversified liveli- hoods and strengthened capacities to with- stand cyclic shocks, disasters and risks.

Promoting Girl Child Education

• We promote education for girls, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to succeed.


• Access to Education**: Advocate for and facilitate access to quality education for girls in underserved communities.

• Community Awareness**: Implement awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of girls’ education and combat cultural barriers.

• Scholarship Programs**: Establish scholarship initiatives to support girls from low-income families in pursuing their education.

• Safe Learning Environments**: Work to create safe and inclusive school environments, free from violence and discrimination.

• Mentorship Programs**: Develop mentorship opportunities connecting girls with female role models in various fields.

• Curriculum Development**: Collaborate with educational authorities to ensure curricula are gender-sensitive and relevant to girls' needs.

• Parental Engagement**: Foster parental involvement in girls’ education through workshops and community meetings, emphasizing the long-term benefits of educating daughters.

Women Empowerment

• Empowering women through skills training and advocacy for their rights and opportunities.


• Training women on life-skills and financial literacy.


• Supporting women livelihood opportunities including formation of Self Help Groups and Village Savings and Loans Association, vocational and entrepreneurship.


• Advocacy against harmful practices – FGM, Early Marriages, GBV.


• Training youth and women on market-informed vocational skills.


• Supporting establishment of market-informed enterprises.

• Promoting Education for Girls - Ensuring access to quality education for girls to enhance their knowledge and skills, fostering confidence and independence.

• Health and Well-being Initiatives - Providing access to healthcare services, including reproductive health education and maternal care, to improve women's overall health and quality of life.

Water, Hygiene and Sanitation

• Providing access to clean and safe drinking water through the construction and rehabilitation of wells, boreholes, and water treatment systems.

• Improving sanitation facilities by building latrines and promoting proper waste management practices.

• Conducting hygiene education and training sessions to promote handwashing, proper hygiene practices, and disease prevention.

• Collaborating with local communities and stakeholders to ensure sustainable and long- term impact.

• Monitoring and evaluating project outcomes to track progress and ensure effectiveness.

• Empowering community members to take ownership of WASH initiatives and maintain infrastructure.

• Advocating for policy changes and increased funding for WASH projects at the local and national levels.

• Support advocacy and supply of Menstrual Health and Hygiene products and services

Health and Nutritional Support

• Supporting the delivery of primary health care services through capacity building health teams.

• Community awareness, including distribution of preventative supplies on communicable diseases.

• Mental and Psychosocial support to vulnerable groups.

• Supporting vulnerable groups in the establishment of nutrition-sensitive livelihoods and food fortification.

• Nutritional Education : Provide workshops on balanced diets and nutritional practices to improve community health outcomes.

• Access to Healthcare : Facilitate access to essential healthcare services, including maternal and child health programs, vaccinations, and disease prevention.

• Food Security Initiatives : Implement programs that promote food production and sustainable agricultural practices to combat food insecurity.

Climate and Marine Conservation

Women Economic Empowerment

Beneficiaries Have Increased Knowledge On Fishing Sector, Business Management and Fish Markets. Leadership and Governance Workshops Have Been Conducted, Strengthening Leadership Skills as the counties take on new devolution roles and powers conferred to them through the adoption of the new constituition.

Vocational Skills Training

GIRD has successfully established over 600 Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLAs) groups within host communities, IDP camps, and returnees' communities in Somalia. Through these groups, individuals have received comprehensive training in financial and business management, empowering them to take control of their economic futures
